Registrar's Office: Transfer Credit

Transfer Credit Process

STEP 1: Read The Transfer Credit Policy

ATTENTION: To award transfer credits, MCC requires official transcripts from the institution where the credits were originally earned. MCC does not grant transfer credit based on transfer credits accepted and recorded by another institution.

To be considered for transfer:

  • The course must be comparable in nature, content, and credit level to an MCC course. Generally, MCC will not accept courses with a smaller credit load than the corresponding MCC course.
  • MCC will accept general education courses completed within ten years of the transfer request with a grade of C or higher (70% or above).
  • Business and information technology courses completed within five years of the transfer request with a grade of C or higher (70% or above) are also eligible for transfer.
  • For Allied Health programs, MCC will accept transfer credits for medical foundation courses and general education biology courses completed within five years of the transfer request with a grade of B or higher (80% or above).
  • For all other programs, MCC will accept transfer credits for general education biology courses completed within ten years of the transfer request with a grade of C or higher (70% or above).
  • MCC may also award transfer credit for valid, active industry certifications or nationally recognized licensure examinations if the certification is deemed appropriate and applicable to the MCC program curriculum.
  • CLEP (College Level Examination Program) test credits are accepted for transfer, provided they meet the institution's transfer credit criteria.

MCC will not award transfer credit for the following types of courses:

  • Courses with Pass/Fail grades unless a minimum passing grade (C or higher) can be confirmed by the transcript.
  • Remedial, retraining, or non-credit courses.
  • Professional development, in-service education, continuing education, or similar courses designed for individuals seeking to upgrade occupational or professional skills, acquire new skills, or prepare for a proficiency examination.
  • Life experience courses or similar courses with credits awarded based on life experience rather than traditional academic work.
  • Internship, practicum, or fieldwork courses. Since these courses are often highly specific to the original institution's program, their eligibility for transfer credit is subject to approval by the Program Director.
  • Developmental or pre-college level courses.
  • Duplicate or repeated courses. MCC will not award transfer credit for the same course taken multiple times.
  • Military Training Courses unless evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE), military training courses may not qualify.
  • Institution-specific orientation courses. Courses like "Freshman Orientation" or "Student Success" are often unique to the original institution and may not transfer.
STEP 2: Complete The Transfer Credit Application Form

Complete the Transfer Credit Application Form to transfer credits:

  • From Other Institution(s): earned credits from other institution(s).
  • From Midwestern Career College: earned MCC credits from previous enrollment with the college.
  • For Academic Waiver: to register for the externship in the 1st term: students in AAS Business, Marketing, Accounting, and IT wishing to register for externship course in their first term in the program.
  • For Unofficial Transcript Evaluation: students exploring their transfer options and inquiring for information purposes only

Academic Waiver

AAS Business, Marketing, Accounting, and IT students with relevant prior academic experience who wish to register for the externship course in their first term at MCC can apply for an academic waiver. This requires completing a transfer credit evaluation of their previous college-level coursework. Before registering for the externship course, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Academic Progress: Demonstrate satisfactory academic progress.
  2. Coursework Completion: Successfully complete at least 12 semester credits in courses related to the program's major to ensure sufficient mastery of theoretical concepts.
  3. CPT Approval (F-1 students only): International F-1 students planning to register for the externship course must obtain Curricular Practical Training (CPT) approval from the Designated School Official (DSO) office.
STEP 3: Submit Official Transcript(s) for Evaluation

Official Transcript(s)

  • Transcripts must be submitted no later than two weeks prior to the term start date.
  • Transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution.
  • Unofficial transcripts, hand carried transcripts in sealed envelopes, and copies of official transcripts will not be accepted.
  • Students may be required to provide a catalog, course descriptions, syllabus, or other relevant documents to help determine course equivalency.
  • Transcripts submitted to MCC for credit evaluation become the property of the college and will not be returned to the student or forwarded to other institutions.
  • All transcripts that are not from an American institution require a course-by-course evaluation by any member from the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) agency.

STEP 4: Evaluation Results

The MCC academic evaluation team assess official transcript evaluations for transfer credit eligibility, while the Registrar's Office proceed with applying the eligible transfer credits to student accounts. Students who completed the Transfer Credit Application Form will receive an email from transfercredit@mccollege.edu with their Evaluation Results, which includes the Transfer Credit Form completed by the academic evaluator.

Transfer Credit Evaluation

  • Outside of existing articulation agreements, MCC will evaluate and consider awarding academic credit for credit earned at higher education institutions accredited by the agencies recognized by the United States Department of Education or similarly accredited international institutions.
  • MCC reserves the right to limit the transferability of credit based on the source of credit, the method of instruction, or the duration of the term. The final determination on the transferability of credit is made by MCC and cannot be appealed.
  • MCC limits the acceptance of transfer credits from other institutions to 49% of the total credits required for any program of study. If the total eligible transfer credits exceed the 49% limit, the Registrar's Office will post transfer credits on the student record up to the limit. Students who wish to change which transfer credits to be applied must contact the Registrar's Office for assistance at registrar@mccollege.edu.

Student Portal

Students will be able to view their posted "Transfer Credits" (TC) and "In Progress Transfer Credits" (IPTC) in the Grades & Attendance tab on the Student Portal within 48 hours.
