How to select your Topic

Your instructor may assign you a specific topic or have you choose your own topic. Things to consider to select a topic can include: 

  • Brainstorming ideas for a topic
  • Choosing a topic that will allow students to understand research located. 
  • Selecting a topic with plenty of resources available
  • creating a list of keywords to narrow down a topic
  • Allowing flexibility to change or adapt the selected topic
  • Defining the research topic in a question
  • Researching the topic for information to create a question or topic idea of the students choice
  • Creating a thesis statement
Brainstorming your Topic

1. Ideas to help create a research topic:

  • Strong opinions on topics of interest
  • News stories of interest 
  • Topics students want to learn more about
  • Topics presented in class lectures, class materials etc. 

2.  Read General Background Information

3. Focus your Topic where it is not to broad or narrow 

4. Create a list of related to your topic

  • Keep track of words that describe the selected topic
  • Look for words that describe or connect to the selected topic
  • Look for common words, words associated with the selected topic and general information. This can be words that contradict or support your topic.
  • Locate broad and narrow terms, synonyms, key concepts for keywords to expand your research.
  • Keep track of words to refer in further research to be used later in databases, websites books and more

5. Allow flexibility to modify your topic

7. Research and learn more about the selected research topic

8. Write a Thesis statement

  • Clearly state the purpose of the research
  • Answer a research question that can proven or inform the reader about the topic. 
  • Be concise
  • One or Two sentences that summarize your thesis
