APA is the style of documentation of sources used by the American Psychological Association. This form of writing research papers is used mainly in the social sciences, like psychology, anthropology, sociology, as well as education and other fields.

Tips for Short Paraphrasing 7th Edition

Paraphrasing/Summaries

  • Rewording of something written or spoken by someone else.
  • Does not need Quotation marks “”
  • Paraphrasing and Summaries follow the same guidelines as quotations

Short Paraphrasing Tips 

  • Include the authors last name and year of publication for the selection of your source
  • If the authors last name is not the start of the sentence; place the author's last name, the year of publication, and the page number in parentheses after the quotation.
  • Any reference used in your document will need to be included in your reference page
  • A short summary is typically 1-2 lines included in the paragraph

EXAMPLE TWO

Doe (2019) discovered and understand they need to use APA style, especially as a class requirement ; what sources can be used to help students?

Tips for Long Paraphrasing

  • 40 words or longer/3 lines or more are block quotes
  • Blockquote: a free-standing block of text and omit quotation marks
  • Long summaries should not be included in the same line within the paragraph or sentence
  • Start the summary in a new line
  • Indent the entire summary (all lines you are directly referencing) ½ inch from the left margin
  • Double space your direct quote
  • Use punctuation marks to finish your quote
  • Include the authors last name, year of publication and page number (p. or p.p.) for the selection of your source
  • If the authors last name is not the start of the sentence; place the author's last name and the year of publication, parentheses after the summary.
  • Any reference used in your document will need to be included in your reference page
