SUBJECT LIBGUIDE: LEARNING APA: Citing E-books

APA is the style of documentation of sources used by the American Psychological Association. This form of writing research papers is used mainly in the social sciences, like psychology, anthropology, sociology, as well as education and other fields.

E-Book Citation: Breaking down the citation in parts

Author's Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial.

  • Authors last name, first and middle name initials
  • If your source uses an Organizations' Name, you use the organizations name i.e  Red Cross; Midwestern Career College
  • If there is no author, use the title of your source:
  • All Proper nouns must be capitalized
  • Punctuation Counts. Put a period after your author
  • Use et al. if there are more than 3 authors 

(Year). 

  • Use Parenthesis: (Year)
  • Place a period after the closing parenthesis (Year).
  • Put the copyright year of the book in the parenthesis
  • Copyright year of books are found within the first few pages in the book.
  • Punctuation Matters: put a period after you enter the year

Title of book: Subtitle if given (edition if given and is not first edition).

  • This refers to the name of your source (book) used in your paper
  • The first letter of the Title and Subtitle must be capitalized.
  • Title of article: Subtitle of article
  • All Proper nouns must be capitalized
  • Put a period after your title

Retrieved from Database Name database.

  • The source is the webpage used in your paper
  • Use ‘retrieved from’
  • After ‘Retrieved from’ add the database name
  • Example: Retrieved from https://ebookcentral.proquest.com
  • Punctuation counts: Put a period at the end
