SUBJECT LIBGUIDE: LEARNING APA: References Rules

APA is the style of documentation of sources used by the American Psychological Association. This form of writing research papers is used mainly in the social sciences, like psychology, anthropology, sociology, as well as education and other fields.

What does the reference provide?

  • It presents the reader sources used.
  • It allows the reader to locate the source used on the paper

Basic Rules

  • The Reference list should be the last page of your paper
  • The Reference list should start on a new page.
  • Label your new page “References” at the top of the page
  1. Do not Bold
  2. Do not underline
  3. Do not use quotation marks
  • Each source used in the paper needs to be cited.
  • Double space your entire paper including references
  • References need to be in Alphabetical order.

Basic Rules-Citation

  • The reference list should be in alphabetical order
  • Multiple articles by the same author should be in chronological order earliest to most recent
  • The reference page should start on a new page.
  • The title of the page should be References
  • Double space your page
  • Use Hanging Indentation
  1. Lines after the first line of each reference used should be indented ½  from the left margin (move lines ½ to the right)
