General
Q. What's the difference between CPT and OPT?
CPT is only available prior to the completion of your degree program and doesn't require USCIS approval. OPT is only available after the completion of your degree program and requires USCIS approval.
Application Process
Q. Is there an hours limit on CPT?
No. You can choose either part time (up to 20 hours per week) or full time (more than 20 hours per week) but there's no limit.
* Please note that If you have 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you are ineligible for OPT.
Q. Do I have to pay CPT fee ($150) every term?
A. Yes. On CPT, you will be enrolled for an externship course and tuition will be charged for the 3 credits you are receiving.
Q. What if my employer doesn't think that I can work? How can I explain CPT?
A. MCC has prepared an info sheet for employers to explain CPT. Please contact DSO@mccollege.edu if further explanation is needed.
While on CPT
Q. What if I lose my employment in the middle of my CPT?
A. You must notify your director and the DSO immediately, and try to find an another employment to continue your externship course. If you are not able to find a job employment during the term, you will receive 'Unsatisfactory' grade for the course.
Q. Can I do CPT while I'm waiting for my OPT approval?
A. No. CPT is only available prior to the completion of your degree program. If you have applied for OPT, it means you have completed your program already, therefore CPT is not available anymore.
