INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICES: State ID & Real ID

State ID & Real ID

*Please note that neither a State ID nor a REAL ID can serve as proof of your nonimmigrant status (F‑1). Even if you have a State ID or REAL ID, you are still required to carry documentation that proves your immigration status.

What is State ID?

A State ID (Illinois State Identification Card) is an official photo identification card issued by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.
It serves as an everyday proof of identity, age, and Illinois residency — useful for things like banking, housing, and identification within the U.S.

You can apply for the ID at the nearest DMV office with the required documents below. What is Real ID?

A REAL ID is not a separate card or certificate. It’s a gold star added to your driver’s license (if you drive), your state ID, or both. Think of it as an upgrade to your existing ID that allows you to do more, such as boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal buildings, on top of the normal uses of a state ID or driver’s license.
